Today was our first full day here in the Dominican Republic
and we spent it getting ready for 4-H Day Camp tomorrow. We started out by meeting
all of the Dominican teens. A few of them I already knew from 2015, but it was
awesome getting to meet new teens. Some of them didn’t speak any English but we
were able to communicate with the help of the bilingual teens. We played some
“icebreaker” games and got to know one another a little bit better. We went
outside and did some team building exercises before we went inside for lunch.
After lunch, we painted picture frames in preparation for camp tomorrow. After
that, we tie-dyed our t-shirts. By this time we were all hot and sweaty and wanted
to go on to the Ojos Indigenas, some fresh water lagoons, but we still had more
work to do. We sorted out the school supplies for donation and got them all
ready to deliver later this week.
After that we finally made the hike to the
lagoons (although some of the Dominican Teens drove there). We spent what felt
like hours swimming in the water and bonding with each other. The water was absolutely
beautiful (and I caught a duck!!!). We finally returned to the foundation to
eat dinner and the Dominican teens stayed and ate dinner with us. It was a
really great day and I can’t wait for the first day of camp tomorrow!
