4-H Day Camp

Our signature event of the week is our two day 4-H Day Camp for Dominican children.  While we sponsored 24 children from a very poor community (Domingo Maiz), the camp is open to all children in the Punta Cana area, which enables kids who would not ordinarily be interacting with each other the opportunity to meet and become friends.

Christine Hodges (4-H Agent in Alleghany Co.) and I planned this year's camp for 48 kids, between the ages of 8-13.  When we arrived in the DR, we found out that there were 58 who wanted to come.  We didn't have enough supplies for that many, but Welinton De La Rosa Sola, our awesome Logistics Coordinator, was able to come up with the extra supplies we needed so we accepted the extra children.  And then 64 showed up the first day!  People continued to call to ask to add more children to the camp.  With 15 Dominican teens, 9 Virginia teens and 4 Virginia adults, we had our largest group ever for the 4-H Day Camp!
