Being a first time counselor with 4-H I didn’t
really know what to expect about how the kids would behave and how they would
feel about non-Spanish speakers trying to lead them. I thought that we would
not find much respect or affection coming our way when we only knew them for a
few hours. My expectations were blown out of the water within the first ten
minutes of day camp. The children were patient with us and genuinely wanted to
get to know us teens. I have never seen a group of 64 kids act so peaceful, yet
bursting with energy. In all the games we played we felt like a part of a big
community of people who had known each other for lifetimes rather than a few
moments. You would never guess that there was a language barrier watching the
way we all joined together like a family.
